Buying advice in detail
Brazilian hair masks are known for intensive care of dry, curly or coloured hair. The term covers very different products, so the label is what counts.
Clarify the purpose
Do you want to condition or straighten permanently? Care masks do not straighten permanently. “Keratin straightening” treatments are something entirely different.
Read the ingredients
With care products, avoid formaldehyde, methylene glycol and formalin in the ingredient list. They irritate the eyes and airways.
Nourishing base
Plant oils, butters and moisturising ingredients are typical. Silicones are not bad per se but should fit your hair routine.
Mind the leave-on time
Stick to the time on the pack. Leaving it on longer does not automatically mean better care.
Hair type
Fine hair is quickly weighed down by rich masks. Thick, frizzy hair tends to benefit more.
When not to buy
- You want to straighten your hair permanently: that is a job for trained professionals.
- You have a sensitive scalp or allergies: do a patch test on a small area first.
- You are pregnant: ask your doctor about the ingredients in straightening products.
Use & care
- After shampooing, apply to towel-dried hair, leave on, rinse out thoroughly.
- Depending on your hair, use once or twice a week and see how your hair responds.
Frequently asked questions
Do these masks straighten hair permanently?
Only if straightening agents are included. Pure care masks do not.
How often should I use it?
Once or twice a week is usually enough; using it more often can weigh hair down.
Does the mask help with split ends?
It can make the ends feel smoother. Damaged ends can only be got rid of by cutting them off, though.
Can I use it on coloured hair?
Usually yes; check the manufacturer's information and look for a mild formulation.
